WICHITA, KS October 1, 2014 - Make-A-Wish® Kansas announces a new fundraising program available for school-aged children: Kids For Wish Kids. This custom-tailored fundraising program provides Kansas schools and youth organizations the opportunity to engage in philanthropy and service activities in order to help grant the wishes of children battling life-threatening medical conditions.

“Through the program, kids of all ages learn that they can make a difference,” says Kids For Wish Kids local program coordinator Suzanna Mathews. “Whether they’re in grade school, middle school, or high school, young people are eager for community involvement. More and more schools and youth groups are offering character development courses or doing themed activities for homecoming week or other special events. Kids are ready to soak up lessons about compassion and kindness and to develop leadership skills, and work with their peers toward a common goal.”

Participating schools and youth groups can determine the type of fundraiser they will hold -- from a bake sale or penny war to a dance marathon or student/teacher basketball game -- and a toolkit is available to provide guidance and support. All proceeds benefit Make-A-Wish® Kansas and will be used to grant wishes for Kansas kids battling serious medical conditions.

Throughout the program, the kids themselves are responsible for forming committees, coming up with fundraising ideas and carrying them out. Teachers and parents often serve as advisers, but ownership of the group belongs solely to the kids involved.

The Kids For Wish Kids program helps to increase awareness of the Make-A-Wish® mission and involves a broader group of people in helping to grant wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions. According to Development Director Lisa Capps, “Kids For Wish Kids fosters the value of community service by providing kids and teens with hands-on experience in helping to grant wishes through your Make-A-Wish® Kansas. It also provides a mechanism for building school spirit and creating an additional partnership between children and teachers outside of the classroom.”

About Make-A-Wish® Kansas
The mission of Make-A-Wish is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. The Kansas chapter accepts referrals and grants wishes for children in every Kansas county except Franklin, Johnson, Leavenworth, Linn, Miami and Wyandotte. Visit http://www.*****/**** for more information.

Note to reporters and news anchors: Make-A-Wish prefers use of the term “life-threatening” rather than “terminal” to describe a child’s medical condition. The term “terminal” is counterproductive to the Make-A-Wish mission.
